The Great Seal of the United States can be traced back to the very day the Declaration of Independence was signed. A select committee, including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, was formed to choose a design. As the seal evolved, use of it and its variations became a popular feature of many flags. Because the Stars and Stripes was considered at the time to be primarily a naval flag design, the land forces quickly adopted the American Eagle as their emblem, and it appeared on many of the regimental colors.
