While a Civil War was waging in the United States, Texas was faced with the daunting task of protecting a vast and open frontier. Under the Confederate constitution the protection of the frontier was the duty of the Confederate government, just as it had been the duty of the Federal government under the Union. Many Texans were torn between loyalty to the United States they had just joined and the strong appeal of States Rights (especially considering they recently won Independence from Mexico in hard fought battle). The large size of Texas made it difficult to defend against invading troops, and the Union army was not the only invader of the Texas frontier. From the deserted swamp lands of Louisiana to the no mans land of the Nueces Strip (ruled by Banditos) and the Comanche grounds of West Texas, the borders of the Lone Star State were under constant threat. Because Texas was so vast and so far away from most of the Civil War conflicts, the majority of battalions were tasked with securing the wide open lands.
The Sixth Texas Cavalry was organized in May 1862 at Porter Springs, Houston County, Texas by Robert S. Gould of Leon County with the main purpose of protecting the Texas frontier during war. The men in Gould’s Battalion were from Houston, Leon, Madison and Trinity counties. The independent battalion of about 500 men fought battles in Texas and Louisiana with the highlight being their victory at the Battle of Mansfield or the Red River Campaign, a foiled Union effort to control the Red River that would have allowed Union forces to enter Texas. While a hard fought battle was waged to protect Texas, there is little mention of this campaign in history because Texas was so far from the strategic warfare. The bold and independent spirit of Texas shone in the actions of this small group of brave men.
As recorded on one monument to the valor of the men of the Confederacy:
"Though adverse fortune denied final victory to their cause, History preserves their fame, made glorious forever.")
