On June 17, 1775 this flag was carried during one
of the earliest and most decisive battles of the American Revolution.
While the battle of Bunker Hill proved to be a British victory by
military tradition, it was actually a serious defeat for the British.
Over 1,000 of their men were lost, wounded or taken as prisoners
of war, while the patriots had less than 400 casualties. The orders
spoken by an American commander trying to preserve the Patriot's
gunpowder, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes"
are forever immortalized in American History. The concept that a
small, insignificant colony, filled to a large extent with economic
and political refugees from western Europe, could stand against
the world's greatest military and Naval power of the day seems indeed
to be improbable.
